City Issues Forum on March 29th: West Houston Association Welcomes Mayor Turner |
|
WHA is very pleased to announce that City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner will be the key note speaker at this year’s first WHA forum. The event will be held at the Westin—Memorial City on March 29th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. We look forward to hearing Mayor Turner’s vision for Houston on topics such as transportation, infrastructure, and public finance.
Mayor Turner was born and raised in West Houston’s Acres Homes community. He graduated from Klein High School (valedictorian), the University of Houston (magna cum laude), and Harvard Law School. Turner then worked at the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski until he founded his own firm, Barner & Turner, in 1983. In 1988, Turner was elected to serve in the Texas House of Representatives for the 139the District in Harris County and continued to serve in the Texas House until he began his term as Mayor on January 2, 2016.
Turner received numerous awards and honors during his 25 years in the House. Following the 83rd Regular Session, Capitol Inside named him the “Most Valuable Player in the Texas House.” Noting that Sylvester’s leadership role in budget negotiations preserved crucial funding for future water needs and public school money, Capitol Inside praised him for delivering “what very well might have been the greatest performance by a state legislator on either side of the aisle in modern Texas history.” Among many notable legislative accomplishments, Turner voted to require the State Department of Transportation to distribute an additional $1.2 billion to local transportation districts to improve roads and reduce congestion.
